Do Dislikes Still Affect YouTube Videos?
Now that nobody can see the total, it is fair to ask whether the button does anything at all. Do dislikes affect YouTube videos in 2026? They do, but not in the way most people assume, and not nearly as much as the old public counter made it feel.
What a dislike does not do
It does not remove a video, restrict it, or trigger any kind of review. Dislikes have never been a moderation signal — that is what reporting is for, and using dislikes as a substitute achieves nothing.
It also does not directly demote a video in search results. YouTube ranks on watch time, click-through, session length and satisfaction surveys. A dislike is one small input among those, not a penalty applied to the video’s score.
What a dislike does do
| Effect | Strength | Who notices |
|---|---|---|
| Recorded in the creator’s analytics | Direct | The uploader |
| Adjusts your own recommendations | Weak | You |
| Feeds satisfaction signals | Indirect | Nobody visibly |
| Warns other viewers | None since 2021 | Nobody |

The effect that actually mattered
The strongest thing a dislike ever did was inform the next person. A ratio visible before you pressed play was a fast, language-independent quality filter: a tutorial that no longer works, a download that is not safe, a review that reads like an advert. You did not need to speak the uploader’s language to read the bar.
That effect is gone from YouTube itself, which is why external YouTube dislike counters exist at all. They do not change what a dislike does inside YouTube’s systems — they restore the one consequence that used to happen outside them.
For creators: how much should you care?
Less than the number makes you feel, with one exception.
A steady low background rate of dislikes is normal on every channel and carries no information. What is worth reading is a change: a video that dislikes at several times your usual rate is telling you something specific about that video — a misleading title, a fix that does not work, a tone that missed. The rate matters, the absolute count does not.
The exception is a sudden spike unrelated to content quality, which is usually an organised campaign rather than an audience reaction. That was the situation YouTube said motivated hiding the count in the first place, and privately you can still see it happening in your own Studio analytics.
What replaced the dislike as a quality signal
Since the public ratio disappeared, viewers have fallen back on slower and less reliable substitutes. It is worth naming them, because each fails in a specific way.
- The comments. Still the most-used substitute, and the easiest to manipulate — comments can be filtered, held for review, or turned off entirely by the uploader.
- The like count on its own. Tells you a video was watched by people who enjoyed it. Says nothing about the people who did not, which is exactly the missing half.
- View-to-like ratio. A rough proxy people compute by hand, but it varies enormously by topic and video length, so it has no stable baseline to compare against.
- External counters. The closest replacement, at the cost of being a reconstruction rather than YouTube’s own figure.
None of these is as fast as a bar you could read before pressing play, which is the honest reason the change annoyed people as much as it did.
Does the ratio still exist?
Inside YouTube, yes — creators see both numbers. Publicly it can only be reconstructed by a third party, which is what a checker does when it shows you the like and dislike figures side by side. There is more on reading that figure in our guide to the like-to-dislike ratio.
Frequently asked questions
Can dislikes get a video demonetised?
No. Monetisation depends on advertiser-friendliness and policy compliance, not audience votes.
Do dislikes on Shorts work differently?
No. Same vote, same private total, same absence of a public number.
Does disliking help YouTube show me less of something?
Slightly. “Not interested” and “Don’t recommend channel” are considerably stronger tools for that job — compared in how to dislike a YouTube video.
Can a creator delete dislikes?
No. They can see them and they can turn off comments, but votes are not editable.
